Upcycling Sweaters and a Cool Hat

by Rachel Baker on January 8, 2014

When I was getting ready for holiday vacation, I realized I have a ton of sweaters that no longer fit or have holes in unexpected areas. I didn’t want to just throw them out but I wasn’t really sure what to do with them. So, I put them on the rag bag stack and figured I’d come back to it after Christmas…in three YEARS…ha!

Well, I am proud to say, yesterday was the day – only three WEEKS later. Looking through some great websites for ideas, I ran across A Beautiful Mess and found a great little tutorial with tips on how to sew sweater knit with the bonus being that you made a cool hat at the end of it.

I made two of them last night (truly, if you are looking for a quick and easy project to clean out your old sweater bag, this is the one – each hat took all of 10 minutes), and with the information I learned about sewing the knit, I also started a set of hand/wrist warmers.

Thanks to the girls at A Beautiful Mess!

It’s the perfect time of year for warm, fuzzy accessories! I love scarves, mittens and snow hats, but did you know you can make them yourself from an old sweater? Today I’ll show you how to recycle a sweater into something brand new!
